The GPS didn’t have any maps in it. It was a great tool for keeping track of things like speed, average speed, total moving time, etc…
In some cases we were also able to figure out where in the world we were by looking at the coordinates in the GPS and triangulating ourselves with our maps. Not a lot of granularity, but we at least knew which country we were in (most of the time)
